It’s a frequent debate I’ve heard across the entire Trailblazer Community: “I’ve spent years in the trenches managing orgs, troubleshooting flows, and delivering business results. So, why should I drop $200+ and study just to prove what I already do every day?”
I used to ask myself that exact same question.
Early in my career, I was the Marketing Cloud admin for an online travel agency. Not just sending emails here and there. I managed a complex ecosystem of publications, transactional messages, and constant data syncing between Marketing Cloud (then ExactTarget) and Salesforce Sales Cloud. Every day was a juggling act: keeping subscriber lists clean, making sure booking confirmations fired on time, and figuring out why a journey wasn’t behaving as the business expected.
I was good at it. But I hit a wall. I felt the platform could do more. We could have smarter targeting, tighter data relationships, and better use of what we already had. At the time, I didn’t have the vocabulary or the foundation to advocate for it confidently. So I decided to get my Salesforce Administrator certification, not because someone told me to, but because I wanted to understand how the whole system worked underneath what I touched every day and prepare the organization for the future.
That decision changed everything. Stepping outside my Marketing Cloud silo forced me to master the platform’s architectural foundation, governance, and standard best practices. Suddenly I could speak the same language as the Sales team, push back on data models that didn’t make sense, and build cross-functional solutions I never would have attempted before. It transformed how I approached strategy, how I showed up in meetings, and ultimately, my entire career path.
I still see that same need today. And honestly, I think it matters even more now.
What does certification mean in the AI era?
Working in a single environment gives you deep knowledge, but it’s often siloed knowledge. This has not changed year over year. That was exactly my situation as a Marketing Cloud admin. I knew our publications and transactional flows inside and out, but my blind spots around the broader platform limited what I could build and propose. Getting certified forced me to close those gaps: platform updates, security models, governor limits, native features I’d been ignoring, and ways to genuinely improve the end-user experience (and increase the company’s bottom line).
Earning a Salesforce certification is built on three core pillars:
- Validated Core Competency: Proves you possess structured, foundational knowledge across your domain rather than fragmented, piecemeal skills built up from one org’s specific quirks.
- Governance & Trust Standards: Demonstrates that you understand security, compliance, and ethical implementation — the critical guardrails where AI models often fail without human oversight.
- Problem-Solving Frameworks: Shows you can translate complex business requirements into viable technical solutions before handing off execution to AI tools.
Your expertise makes AI output reliable
Translating complex business problems into reliable solutions is what humans do best. Managing multiple transactional and marketing publications at scale, across different audiences and communication channels, taught me how to think about data, timing, and intent in ways a prompt alone can’t replicate. That domain expertise makes AI output trustworthy, not just plausible. No matter if your domain is Marketing Cloud or not, this is translatable to other verticals.
Verify Knowledge, Stand Out Everywhere
When I was crafting email campaigns for a travel audience, there was no AI shortcut. I had to think carefully about subject lines that worked across cultures, languages, and ages, test assumptions with A/B experiments, and find the message that actually moved someone to book. That was the craft. Now, AI lets almost anyone generate decent baseline work, making it harder for hiring managers to distinguish genuine expertise from surface-level output.
A Salesforce Platform Admin certification cuts through that noise:
- Signal Over Noise: Independent verification of your hands-on skills and platform depth. It’s no longer just what you say you know. It’s clear what you’ve earned.
- Future-Proofing Your Career: As the platform evolves, maintaining your certification ensures your skills keep pace rather than calcify around one org’s way of doing things.
Expand your impact
Looking back at my career, being a certified Salesforce Admin amplified everything I’d already built. The platform knowledge I gained unlocked doors I didn’t even know existed (both personally and professionally). I see that happening now in the AI era, too. Your domain experience, architectural mindset, and problem-solving instincts are exactly what make AI valuable inside your organization. The stronger your foundation, the more effective your AI collaboration becomes.
