Superhero Spotlight: Security Master

By

Last week we kicked off our series introducing our #AwesomeAdmin Superheroes and their journey through Trailhead. With Trailhead, Salesforce Admins can learn how to build cloud apps for free with fun, interactive tutorials. In the coming weeks we will introduce you to each Superhero and how they blazed their own trail, followed learning paths at their own pace, and became our #AwesomeAdmin Superheroes with Trailhead.

Previously in the Superhero Spotlight…

Taylor Winslow Frederick, eager to learn more about Salesforce, went to a Salesforce User Group meeting. As the User Group meeting started he chatted with the people around him about Trailhead. To his amazement he found out he was not the only superhero at the meeting. Although in plain clothes, one of those people had a very interesting story she shared during a birds of a feather discussion.

Background

“My friends call me Jake, but you can call me Elizabeth.” Named after her grandma, Elizabeth Pinkerton was a daughter of a Locksmith in Phoenix, Arizona. “My dad had the key to everything, so as a kid I never locked anything. I figured it didn’t matter.”

High School was a different story for Elizabeth. After a jealous boyfriend stole her diary and read it over the PA system she asked her grandma for advice. One afternoon Elizabeth’s grandma told her about the work she did on the DDN and suggested she learn cryptography. “From that moment on I was hooked.” said Elizabeth.

College was filled with history, art, and math. Elizabeth was particularly interested in the Enigma machine used in World War II. The fact that you could transmit messages in text that people could read meant only the sender and receiver would read it. This would have been useful back in High School, she thought. After college she spent time as an intern for Jim Sanborn, but inspired by what her Grandma accomplished she wanted more challenging work.

A Security Master emerged…

Elizabeth’s search landed her at a startup in San Francisco. With her mathematics background she was a prime candidate to help them perfect their matching algorithm. To help fill the off days she helped them customize Salesforce She was impressed. The speed at which she could built apps, deploy functionality, and report on data was a real asset to the company. However, she noticed everyone had an ‘System Administrator’ profile. Determined to learn more. She went to Trailhead.

Quickly she dove into the Getting Started with Force.com Trail, she loved the modules on Data modeling, specifically the unit on understanding Custom Objects. This gave her insight into how she could control who sees what in Salesforce! Next she completed the unit on Creating Custom Objects and Fields- now she had insight into how to control data visibility. The unit on Exporting Reports was valuable because now she could setup a weekly export of data- just as a back up security measure.

But she didn’t stop there! Elizabeth jumped to the Creating Validation Rules module because she didn’t want bad data going in if she wanted good reports coming out. She concluded her day by learning about Modifying Page Layouts so that only the data each person needed to see was all that they saw. Excited by this solution she worked through additional units, she knew in the morning she would return not as Elizabeth, but as a symbol of Security for her organization. A Security Master!

Be Security aware!

So excited based on what she learned that she wanted to read more about security in Salesforce. Immediately she downloaded the Salesforce Security Workbook and quickly bookmarked trust.salesforce.com. So excited to find these resources she called her friend to share the news.

“I’ve found my calling! Salesforce is where it’s at, your company uses salesforce right?” she asked her friend. “We sure do! And wait until I tell you about this webinar I attended yesterday.”

To Be Continued… Next Week!
