Over 70 Security Best Practice Sessions for Admins at Dreamforce

I have attended slews of tech conferences throughout my high-tech career, some more rewarding than others. My experiences have ranged from “dazed and confused” to fully engaged and satisfied at the end of the conference.

Looking back, I realize the key element to my positive experience was just a little planning, along with being realistic about what I could accomplish. Given that Dreamforce features over 1,800 sessions, it’s no wonder that attendees are often unaware of the wide range of topics and interest areas covered at the conference.

A great example of this came up in a conversation I had the other day with a new employee here, who was a Salesforce Admin for more than 7 years and had attended Dreamforce several times. He was completely unaware of the wealth of security training, information, and best practices that are shared during Dreamforce.

Here are some discoveries I made myself when searching for security content planned for Dreamforce 2015:

The Human Element of Security

Security isn’t just all about firewalls, encryption and highly technical features and jargon. The reality is that many cyber attacks use malware (malicious software) to infect an individual person’s computer with malicious code designed to steal passwords, data, or disrupt an entire computer/network. This means that as administrators we need to make sure our users are aware that they need to do their part to keep your company’s data in Salesforce secure. My colleague Ben Diepold and I are running a fun and interactive session called “Salesforce on Salesforce: Securing the Human“, in which we will share the human aspects of security – making it real and accessible for all types of admins. If you can’t make this session, my colleague Kyle Watson will be covering some of this content in the Admin Zone Theatre, called “Eat Your Broccoli: Security is Good for Your Salesforce Health”.

Security Basics: Who Sees What

“Getting Started with Roles & Profiles” is a great session for beginner admins who want to learn more about why roles and profiles are, how they are different and how to manage these in your org. And if you are an admin at a nonprofit, we have a session just for you called “Duck & Cover! Salesforce Data Security for Small/Medium Nonprofits”, that will will address these same topics in the context of the unique challenges faced by nonprofits. In both of these sessions, you will walk away with handy tips and tricks that you can bring back with you and use immediately after Dreamforce

Security Takeaways

The bulk of the sessions provide the opportunity to learn how to design, develop and manage your Salesforce implementation in the most secure way possible. New this year are a whole host of sessions created just for Admins! Masha Sedova, Senior Director of Trust Engagement at Salesforce, will be leading a session called “Create a Salesforce Force Field for Your Users“, which will provide you with tips and tricks that will help you balance user priorities like mobility and getting access to data they want, while making sure your data is being protected.

Advanced Administrators and developers will benefit from ten Secure Salesforce sessions, where attendees can learn how to leverage the best Salesforce security features in code and take a deep dive into best practices for building secure API endpoints.
