Expanding your Horizons with Trailhead

By

Have you ever had an event occur in your life that was so unexpected that it redirected you on your life path?

Last year I was excited to be a first-time attendee at Dreamforce. I had planned out my agenda ahead of time and tried to find sessions that were geared towards best coding practices, Lightning, defensive Apex programming, as well as a session on Process Builder. Being from Puerto Rico, I am used to arriving around 30 minutes to an hour early to almost any event. Not being familiar with San Francisco, I wanted to give myself a bit of time to make the sessions. Of course, that means that I ended up being over an hour early.

I remember waiting in line for the Session on Process Builder. The line suddenly started moving and we were ushered into the theater. I took a seat and the speakers began by presenting themselves and I realized that something was a bit off. Suddenly it hit me, wait this is Spanish not English. I had arrived so early that I walked into the Spanish session for Process Builder lead by Caroline Ruiz-Medina by accident.

Hearing Spanish at Dreamforce

I cannot describe what an amazing feeling I felt, being able to hear Salesforce content in Spanish. I often refer to this event as a serendipitous event in my life. With the exception of a few co-workers from a previous job, I don’t have the opportunity to speak about technology and Salesforce in my native tongue.

As the content was being presented, I took in the words and thought to myself “This is amazing. What are the odds of me ending up in what is maybe the only Spanish session in the entire conference?” At that moment I realized that my Salesforce world had suddenly become much broader.

It reminded me of this quote from Lois McMaster Bujold:

“It’s a bizarre but wonderful feeling, to arrive dead center of a target you didn’t even know you were aiming for.”

The session ended and I continued my exploration of the Dev Zone, during which I stumbled upon the Dev Zone Quest. I was inspired to try the Quest and Mini Hack challenge for the amazing swag. I ended up with a powerful addiction to a wonderful program called Trailhead.
