Learn Lightning: Create an App

By

The next step in our journey to learn Lightning is to create an app. Here we go!

1. In Lightning, there’s a handy App Manager in Setup, which allows you see all your apps in one place and make changes to them.

2. From that App Manager page, you can click New Lightning App to create your new app. You’ll be able to give it a name, upload an icon (or a GIF!), and even change the color of the app.

3. Next, you’ll be asked if you want to add options and add items to add to your app. This is where you can pick which objects and elements you want to include in your app. You can also customize the order in which they appear across the top of your app (like tabs from Classic).

4. Finally, you can select which profiles you want to see this app. Click Save & Finish and your app is ready to go!

5. You can access your app by opening the App Launcher in the upper right corner, under the Salesforce logo.

And that’s it! You can edit your app at any time using the App Manager in Setup. Easy, right?

Creating apps in Lightning gives you added functionality that you don’t have in Classic:

  • color branding
  • navigation carrots to access recently viewed records, list views, and create new records from anywhere within the app
  • app pages – customize your default app page view using Lightning App Builder
  • app specific record pages – you can create a special custom page view, i.e. account, for the app that your users are working in

For your existing Classic apps, you can upgrade them in the App Manager to make them available to your Lightning users.

What apps have you created in Lightning? Show me! Send me a screenshot to @gilliankbruce on Twitter.
